MS Dhoni was born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, Bihar (now Jharkhand) to Pan Singh and Devki Devi, both Hindu Rajputs. His paternal village is in Almora's Lamgara block, Uttarakhand. Pan Singh, his father, relocated from Uttarakhand to Ranchi and worked in junior managerial roles at MECON. Dhoni has two siblings: Jayanti Gupta (sister) and Narendra Singh Dhoni (brother).

Dhoni attended DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir in Ranchi, Jharkhand, where he excelled in sports such as badminton, football, and cricket. He was a custodian for his football side and a cricketer for a nearby club. Dhoni demonstrated exceptional wicket-keeping talents at the Commando Cricket Club from 1995 to 1998, and he was selected for the Vinod Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship for the 1997-98 season, where he performed admirably. Dhoni concentrated on cricket after graduating from high school.

Dhoni worked as a TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) at Kharagpur Railway Station in West Bengal for South Eastern Railway from 2001 to 2003.

Dhoni made his international debut in an ODI against Bangladesh in December 2004. Dhoni scored a duck in his debut match, getting caught behind off the bowling of Mohammad Rafique. Second ODI vs Pakistan (April 5, 2005) Dhoni made an early impression, scoring 148 runs off 123 balls. His innings included 15 fours and 4 sixes and helped India post a competitive total of 356/9.

Dhoni was named captain of the Indian cricket team in 2007, and led them to victory in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 event, which was hosted in South Africa that year.
